Speech by the President of Mongolia, U. Khurelsukh, at the Opening of the National Naadam Festival

Published: 2025-07-11 | Translated from: itoim.mn

President Ukhnaagiin Khurelsukh of Mongolia delivered a speech at the opening of the National Naadam Festival, celebrating the 2,234th anniversary of the Tuvgar State, the 819th anniversary of the Great Mongol Empire, the 104th anniversary of the People's Revolution, and the 35th anniversary of the Democratic Revolution.

At the opening ceremony of the National Naadam Festival, His Majesty Emperor Naruhito and Her Majesty Empress Masako of Japan, who are on a state visit to Mongolia at the invitation of the President, are attending as distinguished guests.

“Honorable citizens of our country,
Dear Mongolian brothers and sisters,
Distinguished Emperor Naruhito and Empress Masako of Japan, as well as esteemed guests and visitors who have come to our beautiful land, the heart of the Great Mongol Empire,
Respected attendees of this festival,

On this beautiful summer day, blessed by the eternal sky with rain, the earth rewarding us with its bounty, and the world shining in splendor, the grand historical, powerful festival of the Mongolian people—our National Naadam Festival—is ready to commence with full ceremony.

The Mongolian Naadam, which has its origins in the Xiongnu Empire, is a priceless heritage of state tradition, history, and culture; it symbolizes the unity, independence, and prosperity of the Mongolian people, is the spiritual shield of our nation, and a magnificent celebration of our state power.

To all those eagerly awaiting our unique festival, and to our distinguished guests, I extend my congratulations on the momentous anniversaries of the establishment of the Tuvgar State (2,234 years), the founding of the Great Mongol Empire (819 years), the resurgence of national independence (114 years), the People's Revolution (104 years), and the Democratic Revolution (35 years).

I would like to extend the greetings of the Mongolian people to His Majesty Emperor Naruhito and Her Majesty Empress Masako, who have visited our ancient state, the home of nomadic civilization, the Land of Eternal Sky, and wish them well on the occasion of the Naadam Festival.

Honored citizens of our nation,
Our ancestors, the Mongolians endowed by the sky, established a state in the heart of Central Asia over 2,000 years ago, initiated the Tuvgar State, wrote their history and culture, and became famous throughout the world—an inspiring and wonderful history.

The heroic legacy of the ancient Xiongnu State was succeeded by the Great Chinggis Khan, who founded the Great Mongol Empire, pacified East and West, established great peace in Mongolia, and made an invaluable contribution to the development and progress of humanity.

It is for these reasons that, to preserve, promote, and pass onto future generations the glorious history, heroic deeds, culture, traditions, and customs of our ancestors, Presidential decrees were issued to honorably display the portrait of Bogd Chinggis Khan, to reconstruct the ancient capital city of Karakorum, to uphold and promote the proud Mongolian morin khuur (horse-head fiddle), to produce a new 30-volume comprehensive history of Mongolia, and to establish the museum of the Great Khan for public benefit.

This year, the Golden Relic, the Great White Banner, and the State Seal of the Great Chinggis Khan have been crafted, consecrated with ceremony at the Chinggis Khan National Museum, and made a great object of veneration for the Mongolian people.

Furthermore, in the Orkhon Valley, the sacred hearth of the ancient Mongolian states, the state flag adorned with the golden Soyombo has been raised in perpetuity with grandeur, and the restoration of Karakorum city has officially begun.

Our people say, “Mongolian man and Mongolian horse are as one.”
We Mongolians honor our horses in the state emblem, craft our national flag with the manes and tails of our swift steeds, and through the melodies of our morin khuur, move the world with our unique heritage.

Therefore, with the aim to preserve the culture and tradition of the horse, and to highlight its importance and role in human life worldwide, Mongolia initiated the proposal to the United Nations General Assembly to celebrate “World Horse Day” every year on July 11th—the day of the National Naadam Festival. I am pleased to announce to you all that this has been approved and will henceforth be celebrated globally.

We, as the descendants of the great Khan, guardians of the hearth of the Great Mongol Empire, must revere and follow the teachings and deeds of Chinggis Khan, cherish the values and heritage of our state tradition, pass them to future generations, foster unity, and work together to build a powerful Mongolia.

My fellow Mongolians,
The unique Mongolian Naadam, which resounds the name Mongolia throughout the world, now begins in splendor—raising the nine-white-banner, the great symbol of the state, to the eternal blue sky, greeting the world's sun with our long songs, enlivening the golden earth with the sound of the morin khuur, inspiring our people, mountains, and rivers with color, beauty, and majesty.

Let the powerful wrestlers fill the stage, the galloping hooves of the swift steeds shake the steppe, the arrows of the sharp-eyed archers whistle through the blue sky, and may my wise and noble Mongolian people joyfully celebrate this splendid festival in unity.

May Mongolia rise and flourish under the power of the Eternal Sky.”

"I Want to See How Mongolia Has Changed"

Published: 2025-07-11 | Translated from: news.mn

The Emperor of Japan, Naruhito, and Empress Masako are making a state visit to Mongolia from July 6-13. As part of their program, Emperor Naruhito and Empress Masako are attending the opening ceremony of the Naadam National Festival today in Ulaanbaatar. Since ascending the throne in 2019, Emperor Naruhito has made only two state visits abroad, making Mongolia his third. Previously, in 2007, he visited Mongolia as the Crown Prince on the occasion of the 35th anniversary of diplomatic relations between the two countries.

This historic visit has been covered extensively by Japanese media such as NHK, Japan Times, Japan Forward, and Nippon, as well as Western outlets like Associated Press and ABC. Prior to the visit, Emperor Naruhito held a press conference at the Imperial Palace, sharing his hopes and expectations for the trip, as reported by Japan Forward.

Emperor Naruhito stated:

  • I deeply appreciate the invitation by the Government of Mongolia. I am delighted to visit Mongolia this time together with Empress Masako. In 2022, I warmly welcomed Mongolian President Ukhnaagiin Khurelsukh and the First Lady to the Imperial Palace. After taking part in a horse-head fiddle performance together, I received several invitations. This will be my second visit to Mongolia since 2007. Back then, the people of Mongolia gave me a very warm welcome. I attended the opening ceremony of the Naadam National Festival, the country's biggest celebration. The then-President N. Enkhbayar accompanied me. I greatly enjoyed the wrestling, archery, and horse racing events.

Additionally, I was deeply moved by Mongolia's nature, the traditional ger dwellings, and the lifestyle of the people who live alongside their herds. During this visit, I am looking forward to attending the opening ceremony of the festival again and watching the competitions. Furthermore, I hope to visit Hustai National Park, the homeland of the Przewalski's horse, and experience Mongolia's majestic natural beauty firsthand. I also want to see how Mongolia has changed since my last visit.

Besides this, Emperor Naruhito highlighted several areas of particular interest during his visit to Mongolia, emphasizing the historical ties between the two countries, active trade, ongoing relations, strong cooperation, and the 80 years since World War II.

"Today, Mongolia and Japan engage in active exchanges in a wide range of fields such as human resource development, industry, and health care. For instance, in 2007 there were about 1,100 Mongolian students studying in Japan. That number has quadrupled in the last 20 years," he noted.

Additionally, Mongolian-born sumo wrestlers such as Hoshoryu and Kirishima are still actively competing.

"Given the long-standing cooperation between our countries, I am eagerly looking forward to meeting a broad range of people during this visit — including the President and First Lady, members of the Japanese community in Mongolia, and Mongolians who have ties to Japan — to hear their perspectives on the history and current state of relations between our two countries," the Emperor said.

The Japan Times highlighted Emperor Naruhito's visit to the Mongolian Kosen Technology College, which adheres to the standard of Japanese technical colleges.

According to their report: "Emperor Naruhito visited the Mongolian Kosen Technology College, established in Ulaanbaatar in 2014 with Japanese support. The school was founded by Mongolians who had studied at Japanese Kosen schools. It has five departments, offers a five-year program for training engineers, and about 40 percent of its graduates secure jobs in Japan."

During his visit to the college, Emperor Naruhito viewed robots and other devices created by students, describing them as inspiring.

On Wednesday evening, Emperor Naruhito and Empress Masako met with eight Japanese citizens living and working in Mongolia, including 84-year-old Aya Kon, who publishes a magazine about Mongolia in Japanese, and Reiko Nakanishi, a local school teacher. When asked what he wished to share with people in Japan, Aya Kon replied, "I would like to share with them the simple and peaceful life of the Mongolian nomads."

Some are taking photos, some are wearing Mongolian deels and soaking up the festive atmosphere. They said that this is their first time at the festival and that they are interested in Mongolian culture and traditions. We spoke with them and listened to their impressions.

Maya and Anna from Poland:

“This was the most interesting among the festivals I have attended. So many things were happening at once that I didn’t even know where to look. Amazing. A lot happened. It exceeded our expectations.

We haven’t had time to see everything yet. But since we know Mongolian people love horses, we think the horse racing will be our favorite.

Will you recommend the Naadam festival to other tourists?

Yes, definitely. It is one of those festivals you have to try. It was just like a mini Olympic opening ceremony.”

Guillermo and Iker from Spain:

“It was amazing, just like the opening ceremony of the Olympics. The performances, the music, and the horses – everything was great. The people’s outfits and the way they danced to the rhythm of the music were really moving.

We tried khuushuur, it was delicious. We really liked Mongolian meat.

Tonight we will fly to the south of Mongolia. Then we will travel to the Gobi Desert and visit other beautiful natural places. We are traveling with a group that came to watch Naadam and to tour the countryside.

Yesterday we watched the horse racing. It was truly wonderful. We would absolutely recommend Naadam to other tourists. It was an amazing experience. I even teared up a little.”

Bransha, an artist from Serbia:

“I am visiting Mongolia for the first time. Coming to Mongolia during Naadam has been my dream for many years. I am an artist, and I participated in the Ara Festival held in the countryside.

I decided to extend my stay to watch Naadam. Mongolian people are very welcoming and kind. Coming here fulfilled my dream.

As part of the Ara Festival, I created an artwork and am still at the Ara camp. It has been an incredible experience.”

Rivers Exceeding Long-Term Average by 5-90 cm

Published: 2025-07-11 | Translated from: ikon.mn

As of July 11, the Meteorological and Environmental Monitoring Agency has provided information about rivers currently experiencing flooding.

Rivers exceeding the long-term average water levels by 5-90 cm include: Tuul (Bosgiin bridge), Selenge (Khyalgant bag, Zuunburen sum, Sukhbaatar sum), Orkhon (Ulziit, Orkhontuul sum), Ider (Tosontsengel sum), Urd Tamir (near the aimag center), Zavkhan, Teel, Khozhuul, Sharga, Zag, Baydrag (Bayangburd sum), Zegstei, Khurkh, Balj, Ulz, Khovd (Ulgii, Myangat sum), Buyant (center of Khovd aimag), Doloonnuur (Munkhkairkhan sum), Kharkhiraa (Tarialan), and Khariig (Sagil sum).

Today, some areas in the central aimags and most parts of the eastern aimags will have rain, thunderstorms, and heavy showers. Because of this, the intensity and amount of precipitation may cause river water levels to rise sharply in a short time, and there could be flash floods in dry streambeds and ravines. Therefore, the public is advised to camp and rest safely, away from flood-prone areas, and to be cautious when spending time near rivers and lakes. People should observe conditions and avoid camping or staying overnight in mountain valleys, river basins, and floodplain areas, and should use only permitted roads and bridges.

Monitoring water level and flow changes of the Tuul River with artificial intelligence

Published: 2025-07-11 | Translated from: unuudur.mn

Devices that measure the flow speed, water level, and changes in precipitation of the Tuul River using ultrasonic optical sensors have been installed around the capital area, according to the river basin administration. As a result, based on the data from these measuring devices, it is now possible to determine the river's water and precipitation levels and the risk of flooding with the help of artificial intelligence, enabling preventive measures and effective response to potential risks.

In recent years, pollution and degradation of the Tuul River have become pressing issues. Researchers have established that its level of pollution now rivals that of China's Yellow River. Additionally, the river's flow has greatly decreased and receded. For instance, this summer the water level near the capital dropped sharply, and in several locations it even dried up, as reported by Z. Batbayar, head of the Water Authority. With the help of technology, accurate measurement and constant monitoring and reporting of changes in the Tuul River's flow and water level has become significant.

Monitoring of the Tuul River using artificial intelligence will be carried out by the 'Intelligent Technology' company in cooperation with experts from the basin administration.

Kh. Baasanjargal: There Is No Physical or Psychological Health Check Performed Before Children Start Racing

Published: 2025-07-11 | Translated from: gogo.mn

Kh. Baasanjargal, a member of the Parliamentary Standing Committee on Legal Affairs' Subcommittee on Human Rights, is known for her special focus on the rights, health, and safety of child jockeys.

When she arrived at Khui Doloon Khudag to personally observe how officials check on child jockeys, inspect their clothing and equipment before they start racing, we had a chance to ask her a few questions.

Kh. Baasanjargal, a member of the Human Rights Subcommittee, said: "After seeing the news yesterday about racehorse child jockeys, I became concerned and came here today. I wanted to see how the actual activities to protect these children are conducted in reality. Every year we talk about the rights of child jockeys; therefore, I wanted to personally see the situation on the ground. This is not an inspection. I have noticed several issues that require attention.

First, children's birth certificates do not have photos. So, there are doubts about whether the child is actually who they claim to be. Second, although the police, child protection, and horse associations are present here, they do not share information with each other at all. At a minimum, when trying to find information about a child by their number—for example, where the child is from or how old they are—the Child and Family Center does not have such data. To get this information, we have to consult the horse commission and check handwritten records.

Third, a particularly important point is that there are no physical or psychological health checks performed on the children. Emergency medical staff (103 doctors) are present here, but only provide medical help if there is an injury. There is no doctor's check before the children start racing. This is a very worrisome issue.

This is not even a work that takes many days. For just 2-3 days during the Naadam festival, we should revise the system to give more attention to child jockeys. Also, although they claim to follow safety clothing standards, many children wear very old clothes and do not wear boots. When I spoke to jockeys who were disqualified because their horse did not meet the required wither height, they explained, "Wearing boots is uncomfortable, and when riding bareback, boots can slip off," but we must protect our children. Although the law requires protection, it is not realized in practice," she said.

S. Ariunbold: The risk of children falling off horses increases during dusty conditions

Published: 2025-07-11 | Translated from: gogo.mn

The team from the Ulaanbaatar Emergency Medical Center is working at Khui Doloon Khudag. We spoke with the center's director, S. Ariunbold, about some issues.

  • How is the Emergency Medical Center organized at Khui Doloon Khudag? Have there been any health issues among the child jockeys?
  • The Naadam Festival’s horse races began yesterday with races for two and three-year-old horses. The Emergency Medical Center is operating with six vehicles and six doctors from July 10th to 13th.

Our activities are carried out in two main directions. First, we provide medical assistance to the festival attendees at Khui Doloon Khudag. Second, we provide 24-hour emergency care for the child jockeys in the horse races. Two separate teams—each consisting of a doctor and a driver—are stationed overnight at Khui Doloon Khudag.

This year's festival is happening during very dry conditions. Although there were relatively few stallions in the recent race, it was extremely dusty. When it's very dusty, the risk of children falling off their horses increases. In the stallion race, one child fell from a horse. Two children dismounted because their horses were injured, and veterinarians examined those horses.

  • Did any children fall during yesterday’s two and three-year-old horse races?
  • Three children fell during the race for three-year-olds, and four children fell in the two-year-old horse race. Two children were transferred to the Central Military Hospital for further diagnosis. The Central Military Hospital is operating at Khui Doloon Khudag, providing ultrasound and X-ray services to diagnose head and other injuries on-site.

NCCD: Advising Caution to Prevent Food Poisoning During the Naadam Holiday

Published: 2025-07-11 | Translated from: news.mn

During the long public holidays of the Naadam festival, it is common for families and friends to gather in large numbers and go on outings. Along with this, the need to ensure food safety and prevent food poisoning and infections increases. Therefore, the National Center for Communicable Diseases has issued the following warnings and advice.

Food poisoning, or foodborne illness, is an infectious disease that occurs when contaminated food is consumed. Bacteria, viruses, parasites, and the toxic substances they release in food products are the most common causes of this type of illness. Depending on the cause, the symptoms of the illness may vary. Some of the most common symptoms of food poisoning are as follows: fever, diarrhea, vomiting, loss of appetite, and abdominal cramps.

To prevent food poisoning, it is necessary to thoroughly wash your hands with soap, check the expiration dates of food products, wash fruits and vegetables, use boiled or clean water for drinking, get enough sleep and rest, consume beneficial bacteria, and seek medical attention if needed. These infections can arise at any stage of food processing, production, or storage. Although food poisoning is unpleasant and uncomfortable, it is a common health issue that can occur in daily life.

When preparing safe food, it is important to maintain proper hygiene by thoroughly washing hands with soap, keeping food preparation surfaces clean, storing raw and cooked products separately, thoroughly cooking food, storing food at appropriate temperatures, and using safe food and drinking water. The NCCD recommends that citizens follow these guidelines to have a healthy and safe Naadam holiday.
