The Flood Protection Retaining Wall on the Selbe River Will be Completed Next Month
Published: 2025-06-01 | Translated from: unuudur.mn
The "Selbe Revival" project was launched with the aim of strengthening the embankment of the Selbe River, improving river flow, and preventing potential flood risks. Within this framework, the first phase of constructing a 1.4 km long and 4-4.5 meter high steel-reinforced concrete retaining wall near the Natur area began on June 20 of last year. As of now, 1.2 km of the retaining wall has been built, and they plan to complete the remaining work by June 30. The construction is being carried out by "Bilguun Mongol Construction" LLC, with technical supervision by the Capital Investment Agency. Regarding the progress of the work, Project Manager R. Damba of "Bilguun Mongol Construction" LLC said: "The flood protection facility we are constructing covers Bayanzurkh district, 41st khoroo, and Sukhbaatar district, 1st khoroo. These khoroos have many residential complexes and are located near one of the city's main streets and roads. Therefore, during the assembly of the retaining wall, the work tends to slow down due to significant engineering infrastructure such as cables and heating lines along the Selbe River. Currently, the construction of the retaining wall is over 80% complete, and we are working according to the schedule to finish by June 30. We are also carrying out the concrete casting work during the night so as not to disrupt traffic." Furthermore, after the retaining wall is completed, E. Odchimeg, a hydraulic engineering inspector at the Capital Investment Agency, mentioned that they plan to finish works such as adjusting the riverbed, installing guardrails and rock reinforcements to prevent scouring by August 30. Regarding the landscaping work, G. Bilguun, Head of the Urban Development, Waste Management Agency, said: "We plan to commence landscaping work immediately after completing the retaining wall. The design and estimates for the landscaping along the Selbe River retaining wall have been prepared by the Urban Planning and Research Institute. Currently, the documentation is pending verification at the Center for Construction Development of the Ministry of Construction and Urban Development. As part of the landscaping, we will comprehensively create green spaces, leisure areas, lighting, and walking and cycling paths."

International Children's Day is being celebrated
Published: 2025-06-01 | Translated from: montsame.mn
Ulaanbaatar - Today marks International Children's Day, a day celebrated in many countries around the world as a valuable occasion for children's rights, protection, joy, and the future. In 1924, the Declaration of the Rights of the Child was first adopted in Geneva, and at the World Conference for the Well-being of Children held in Geneva in 1925, a call was made to designate June 1st as International Children's Day. In 1951, the Women's International Democratic Federation decided that every country should celebrate a specific day to protect children's rights and bring joy to children. Mongolia has been celebrating this day since 1952. On May 8, 1925, the famous writer D. Natsagdorj and his associates initiated the establishment of children's organizations and movements in our country. On June 1, 2002, the Mongolian Government adopted and implemented the National Decade Program (2002-2010) to improve children's development and protection. Today, more than 40 countries around the world widely celebrate Children's Day. Our country is one of the few that marks Children's Day at the national level and has legally designated it as a public holiday. From 1952 to 1994, it was celebrated as Children's Day, from 1995 as Mother's and Children's Day, and from 2003 it reverted to being called Children's Day again.

Under the “Ger” Project, 82 Households Have Switched to Solar Heating
Published: 2025-06-01 | Translated from: unuudur.mn
The "Ger" project, implemented in Songinokhairkhan district to reduce air pollution, supplies electric heaters with energy from small-scale solar generators. Through this initiative, residents and government agencies are being educated about the possibility of heating traditional Mongolian gers without burning firewood or coal. S. Nasantogtokh, D. Dolgor, D. Erdenetsestseg, and Ch. Odgerel, who graduated under an Australian Government scholarship, collaborated with the Asia Foundation to implement the "Ger" project as part of the "Women's Leadership-2025" program. As a result, 82 households have switched to solar-powered heating, eliminating the need for chimneys. Among these, work is underway to connect seven households in the first phase to the power grid and amend their electricity supply contracts. This will allow families that generate excess solar electricity during the summer to feed the surplus back into the grid and reduce their bills accordingly.
Let's Establish a Fruit Orchard Park within the “One Billion Trees” Project
Published: 2025-06-01 | Translated from: unuudur.mn
The “One Billion Trees” movement is a timely and important initiative, and it is commendable that it has become a nationwide effort. However, it is essential to turn this into a highly beneficial movement. Planting trees in areas with little oversight or protection will have no economic benefit. Since resources and manpower are already being invested in tree planting, we should focus on making these efforts productive and practical. In our country, based on the expertise, experience, and research of professional organizations such as the Agricultural Research Institute, the Association of Fruits and Berries, and the Mongolian State University of Agriculture, we should at least establish one "fruit orchard park" station. For example, by including this in the budget of the "One Billion Trees" project and utilizing graduates from the Fruit and Vegetable Department of the Zaamar Technical and Vocational School, we can choose suitable sites and establish such a station. Instead of spending large amounts of money planting trees in unmonitored, unprotected locations, it is much more effective to create jobs for a group of people, improve their livelihoods, and use fruit grown in our country's own soil to supply the population's needs. Consuming homegrown food, cultivated in clean and fertile Mongolian soil by our own hands, is far more beneficial to the health of Mongolian people than importing fruits from foreign countries. Therefore, I urge Minister of Food, Agriculture and Light Industry J. Enkhbayar and the relevant authorities to support this proposal, to implement it in practice, to increase employment, and to focus on providing the population with organic products.
Healthcare Sector to Establish a Grove in the 'IGM' Park
Published: 2025-06-01 | Translated from: montsame.mn
Within the framework of the national "Billion Trees" movement initiated by the President of Mongolia, trees will be planted at eight locations in Ulaanbaatar city this year. As part of this initiative, over 300 healthcare sector employees yesterday planted and watered three types of trees at the "IGM" park in Bayanzurkh district. At the event, Minister of Health T. Munkhsaikhan noted, "The President of Mongolia announced an initiative to plant and grow one billion trees nationwide by 2030, which has become a nationwide movement. By contributing to tree planting and cultivation, we are protecting our environment, mitigating climate change, increasing forest and water resources, and helping to maintain ecological balance. As a result, conditions will be created for citizens to live healthy and safe lives in a healthy environment. I would like to call on everyone engaged in tree planting to not just plant trees and leave, but to continue caring for and nurturing them. The healthcare sector will establish a grove in this park." It is planned to intensify the tree planting movement by planting 570 million trees in 2025-2027 and sustainably continue by planting and growing 850 million trees in 2028-2030. So far, through direct and indirect efforts, 84 million trees have been planted, increasing the quantity and size of trees, seedlings, sapling stock, seeds, and nurseries by 5-6 times compared to previous years.
I Wish for Children to Play and Pick Fruits in the Garden Shaded by Apple and Plum Trees
Published: 2025-06-01 | Translated from: montsame.mn
Eight years ago, Dulam Sergelenbaatar decided to plant fruit trees when his eldest son was born, and he acclimatized varieties that can withstand the harsh conditions of Siberia to his native Dornod. Not stopping there, he launched the "Kherlen Golyn Apple-5000" project, with the goal of establishing a large agro-park, enterprise, and training and research center by 2030, and has been successfully implementing this plan. Two years ago, when we met, I remember you mentioned difficulties in securing electricity for your 10-hectare project site. Have you been able to solve this issue?
Yes. Three years ago, I started the "Kherlen Golyn Apple-5000" project with the goal of establishing an agroforestry farm with 5,000 apple and plum trees and 30-40 thousand other types of trees, as well as a training and research center in Dornod province by 2030. Since then, I've worked every day to realize my aspirations. Currently, we have planned 3 hectares, and on this land, through strip planting, we've planted 10,000 poplars and willows, and in our nursery, we have around 25,000 saplings including almond, apricot, poplar, and wild cherry. We've also created mother plantations of apple and plum trees. Recently, we've managed to provide renewable energy through a 10KW solar system for the site. You have said before that it is better to grow fruit trees from cuttings of trees already adapted to the local soil than from seed. When do you plan to start mass planting?
We are planning to start from next year. It is important to propagate from five-year-old trees already adapted to our local soil, so right now we are growing the mother trees for the orchard. From a professional point of view, we are growing apple trees using grafting technology. Just as young livestock can be stunted if bred too early, if you force a tree to bear too much fruit when it's still small, it can lack nutrients and become stunted. In the future, I wish for families to visit orchards shaded by apple and plum trees, pick their own fruit, and let their children play and run around. I also dream of teaching little kids about nature and the benefits of hard work, and starting to embed this in their memory. This dream has started to come true. The apples grown in your garden taste much better than imported fruit. How long after planting do trees start to produce fruit?
We planted fruit trees in our yard and harvested the first crop three years later. That was during the Covid lockdown. Since then, every autumn, we harvest more than 300 kg of apples and plums from about 40 trees in our yard. Even our single peach tree produces more than 30 kg of fruit. It's wonderful to serve our homegrown fruit to visiting family and friends. Fruit trees must need lots of care and attention, right?
Because they are grown using agricultural techniques and not naturally adapted to the environment, they need more care than ornamental trees. They must be fertilized with bird and animal manure, and during the budding and flowering period in spring, they need careful protection. The more flowers you manage to keep, the more fruit you will grow. Like the saying about a rich family's cows calving easily, even some of our one- and two-year-old trees have flowered this spring, which is promising. I've heard that a mature apple tree can yield around 100 kg of apples. Is your family's harvest increasing year by year?
Apple trees grow to about 7 meters tall and can live for 70-80 years. A mature tree can produce 90-120 kg of apples. Our five- to six-year-old trees produce more than 20 kg annually. So if you have three to five apple trees in your yard, you don't need to buy imported apples. How many households have followed your example and planted fruit trees in their yards? You also maintain the "Dornod Province Apple and Plum Growers" social media page, which seems to share a lot of interesting information and advice.
There is a Russian proverb: "Even if you won't eat the fruit, plant an apple tree for future generations." I believe it's important for households with yards to grow their own fruits and vegetables, and for those in apartments to have access to locally grown produce. That's why I have gotten into the habit of supplying a small number of saplings to the market every spring and autumn. Families who have bought apple saplings from me are already harvesting fruit and enjoying their yield. In the last few years, I've sold and given advice for saplings to about 800 families, sharing my experience with each. Thank you.

The Benefits of 'A Cup of Milk Every Day' Are Great
Published: 2025-06-01 | Translated from: ikon.mn
The milk consumption of students in our schools is twice as low as the recommended amount. Every year on June 1st, World Milk Day is celebrated. This day was initiated by the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) of the United Nations in 2001 and has since been widely celebrated across more than 50 countries, emphasizing the nutritional value and importance of milk and dairy products. Mongolia has been taking part in this celebration since 2016, and we are nearing a decade of participation. However, the real concern lies in the current state of milk consumption among the Mongolian population, especially children, in a country traditionally rich in livestock. Unfortunately, various reports indicate that milk consumption is still insufficient and even worrying. For instance, according to the 6th National Nutrition Survey of Mongolia, 3.6% of primary school students experience stunted growth, 2.7% are underweight, and 23.7% are overweight or obese. Additionally, 7.5% of primary school students are anemic, the median urinary iodine concentration is below the optimal level (found to be 96.0 µg/L compared to a recommended ≥100 µg/L), vitamin D deficiency is at 60.5%, and a further 25.6% have insufficient reserves. Another study conducted under the "Supporting School Lunch in General Education Schools" project by JICA in 2023 indicated that while 36.3% of surveyed primary students drank milk daily, the average daily intake was only 110 ml. However, the 2020 joint ministerial order on nutritional standards for school-age children in Mongolia recommends a daily intake of 310 ml of milk for children aged 7-10, nearly three times higher than the current consumption. Again, according to the 6th National Nutrition Survey, 3.6% of primary school students were stunted, 2.7% underweight, 23.7% overweight or obese, 7.5% anemic, and vitamin D deficiency was at 60.5% with another 25.6% having insufficient reserves. Mongolia enacted the "Law on School Catering Services in General Education Schools" in 2021 and adopted the National Program to Support School Meal Production and Services 2020-2025 to ensure its implementation. Within the framework of this program, the FAO and the German GIZ, with EU funding, implemented the "STREAM: Supporting Agricultural Management and Ecosystem Sustainability" project, which over the past three years has focused especially on increasing milk consumption among rural primary school students. This report presents the tangible results from this effort. The results of providing milk to more than 400 primary students in Binder soum (district): Although Mongolia has many livestock, nationwide milk and dairy consumption remains insufficient. Young children and adolescents, in particular, need higher milk intake. With this in mind, the STREAM project established a milk-processing plant in Binder soum and since 2022 has provided 400+ students in grades 1-5 with milk 2-3 times per week as part of the school lunch program, which proved very effective. This effort supported the government programs of 2020 and 2021 aimed at improving school food services, as well as launched the “A Cup of Milk for Every Child” campaign in collaboration with the local government and schools. STREAM project manager A. Amgalan said, “Our project aimed to include milk in the school lunch program to support children's health and development. However, it was challenging—just collecting raw milk from households and boiling it did not guarantee food safety. Therefore, we developed a supply system and focused first on ensuring stable winter milk supply by increasing cow milk yield. Next, we supported the establishment of a processing plant with a one-ton capacity in the soum. In order to diversify dairy consumption, we produced five types of products including vanilla milk, fermented drinks, curd, yogurt, and cream. Three of those products were supplied to the school weekly for three years. The results were evaluated and reported by the National Center for Public Health (NCPH).” To ensure an uninterrupted milk supply to the Binder School lunch program, a processing plant capable of producing 1,000 liters of products daily was built, with efforts focused on improving cow milk yield. In order to sustain the dairy supply chain, another key measure was to improve the livestock breed quality. By providing high-yield cows, the mini-factory established for herder women in the project could operate at full capacity, supplying students with safe, hygienic milk and dairy products. The project provided equipment and training on dairy processing technologies. To improve winter milk supply, 50 cows in a milk producers' group were artificially inseminated with Simmental semen. In order to expand awareness of artificial insemination, two specialists in each of Binder, Bayan-Adarga, and Ömnödelger soums were specially trained. Overall, by addressing foundational issues such as livestock quality and winter supply, the project ensured safe and quality milk for schoolchildren. Going forward, the stability of plant operations is critical, as emphasized by STREAM’s project manager A. Amgalan. Project research once again confirms Mongolian children lack milk. Now let’s look at how the project’s results were evaluated through a survey done in collaboration with the National Center for Public Health (NCPH): The survey found that primary students in Binder (where the milk project was implemented) had an average height 1.5 cm taller than students in Ömnödelger, and third-graders in Binder had a stunting rate four times lower than their peers in Ömnödelger after three years in the program. The survey compared grades 2-5 students in Binder (sample group) and Ömnödelger (control group), covering 431 students in total. The study aimed to compare energy and nutrient intake, physical and bone development, and knowledge of dairy benefits. This is the first time such a long-term, detailed study on the impact of regular milk intake on schoolchildren's growth has been conducted in Mongolia. The results, again, showed that children in Binder had on average a 1.5cm taller stature than those in Ömnödelger, and third-graders in Binder had one-fourth as much stunting. Overweight and obesity rates were 16.7% in Binder and 21.4% in Ömnödelger. Evaluating weekly dairy consumption, 49% of Binder schoolchildren consumed dairy 2-4 days a week, compared to only 14.5% in Ömnödelger, while 31.4% of children in Binder and 70.5% in Ömnödelger reported never consuming dairy. The recommended daily intake is 3-4 servings, but students averaged only 1.9 servings, about half of what is recommended. Specifically, Binder students averaged 2 servings, and Ömnödelger students 1.8. Excessive sugar intake increases calcium loss and causes osteoporosis and tooth decay. It is recommended that sugary foods be consumed only once per week. However, 38.7% of surveyed students drank sweetened beverages 2-4 days per week and 5.6% drank them five or more days; 43.9% ate sweet foods 2-4 days, with 13.9% eating them five or more days per week. Physical metrics by age, sex, and class were compared, showing greater stunting in Ömnödelger’s grade 3 students (9.1%) than in Binder (1.9%). Overall overweight and obesity were 17.4% (20% in Ömnödelger, 14.7% in Binder); the highest rates were among six-year-olds. Average heights for grades 2-5 students in Binder were 0.4 to 1.5 cm taller than in Ömnödelger. Dr. J. Bayasgalan, Senior Researcher from the NCPH, said: "After three years of milk provision, Binder's students are taller than those in Ömnödelger, though statistical significance was p=0.06." Let’s establish the practice of giving our children the recommended daily norm of 300ml of milk. The data clearly demonstrates that increasing milk consumption through the school lunch program has a tangible positive impact on children's growth. This highlights the need to regularly provide the recommended 300ml of milk per day to students in all schools, rural and urban alike. Furthermore, the "A Cup of Milk for Every Child" campaign in Binder included significant activities to promote the importance of dairy to students. Findings show that Binder’s students have relatively good knowledge of dairy benefits, but only one in four knew the recommended daily amount, and only one in eight could explain milk’s full benefits, with understanding of milk’s nutrients being insufficient. Therefore, further awareness and training are required. The substantial benefit of "A Cup of Milk Every Day" is clearly shown in this study. Therefore, it is vital to promote and expand the campaign nationwide. In summary, Mongolian children should not grow up lacking essential nutrients and vitamins from milk and dairy. It is high time to act on the years-old talk about school milk programs. We therefore urge parents, schools, and the government to embrace the "A Cup of Milk Every Day" initiative, as many governments worldwide ensure children receive a daily cup of sterilized milk at school for health and growth.
